Sir Charles has come a long way since it first opened nearly two years ago, undergoing a major renovation in early 2016, but has remained true to its sophisticated modern charm and Asian fusion-inspired cafe cuisine.
Located on bustling Johnston Street, the cafe has no shortage of Fitzroy foot traffic and street views from its footpath seating. The interior, however, is where the magic happens with a large open space that just keeps on going. Formerly a bagel bakery, the space is filled with small tables, large tables, benches and booths with the bar and counter at the front and the kitchen at the rear. A glass walled room halfway along one side houses the roaster that churns out the house blend and single origin coffees.
Hanging light bulbs, white walls, polished concrete floor, light timber and copper furnishings and a scattering of pot plants and hanging baskets all combine to create a clean and modern, yet homely atmosphere.
The food menu caters for breakfast and lunch dining with all the usual suspects, but with a difference. The popular signature dish is the Sir Charles Benedict, a take on the classic eggs benedict. Panko crumbed eggs, sriracha hollandaise, bacon and fresh chilli on a bed of roti bread. Creamy, spice, crunch, it has it all. There is a variation with added smoked salmon rillette and spinach also available.
Other highlights include the Raspberry ripple porridge, “Ms Carter’s Waffles” Belgian waffles, Cauliflower, chickpea and kale fritters and the Korean Fried Chicken burger.
Coffee is roasted in-house with espresso and filter options. Soy, almond and coconut milk are available. Tea is by Larsen and Thompson. Sir Charles is fully licensed with a range of beers, wine and cocktails on offer.
Although renovating early on in its journey may have seemed odd, it has been for the best and Sir Charles is as busy and popular as ever.
