Just a short stroll from busy Burke Road, Legacy brings the ever growing mantra of superfood to the Camberwell area. Combined with some specialty coffee, this newcomer has hit the ground running with steady weekend crowds queuing out the door.
Located at the foot of an apartment building, the cafe has built a sleek interior with extensive use of red brick with a modest splash of light timber and a white ceiling. The centre piece of the venue is a large communal bench, built from brick with timber strips for the seating positions. The bar and counter is also brick. The floor is brick. Did I mention the use of bricks? A scattering of green vines running down one of the brick walls builds an ambience of a cost intimate outdoor eating area, but indoors.
There is also some small tables and outdoor seating.
The creative food menu has a focus on breakfast with just handful of lunch dishes. There’s the usual suspects; smashed avo, pulled pork eggs benedict, ricotta hotcakes; and then some standouts which include sweet potato and kale fritters, buttermilk fried chicken brioche and the interesting choice of seared sesame tuna tataki.
The buttermilk fried chicken was sold out on my first visit and so I opted for the fritters instead. Very pleasing to have fritters that maintain that distinct crunch, something that many cafes fail at. The goats cheese, kaiser bacon and tomato chutney were a nice addition.
There was too much hype around the fried chicken that a second visit the following weekend was definitely in order, and it was indeed worth the wait. Lightly crunchy fried chicken with charred corn slaw, mustard and sriracha mayo on a toasted brioche bun. Spicy mayo has been done before but it was the addition of the corn to the slaw creating a balanced mix of sweet and spice that made this a standout dish. A must try, but a bit messy to pick up and eat.
A couple of single origins available as espresso or filter from Small Batch and a house blend from Dimattina are on offer with options of soy and almond milk and, wait for it, chilli – something that I’ll need to try on the next visit. There is also a range of teas, juices, milkshakes and superfood smoothies available. The “Mr Brightside” smoothie is a standout with its dragonfruit, coconut yoghurt, chia seeds, banana and honey.
Legacy is a fantastic new venue that brings a quality selection of food and drink to the South Eastern suburbs.
