Brandy, Kew’s newest opening has appeared in one of the quietest cafe launches so far this year. Hiding on a street corner in the middle of a residential area, it was complete chance that it was noticed after a wrong turn heading somewhere else. It also comes as a surprise that Brandy is the latest from the team behind other names like Temperance Society, Miss Frank and Espresso 3121.
The cafe has prime position on one corner of a roundabout with large floor to ceiling windows providing views out into the surrounding neighbourhood. Seating is intimate with barely a handful of small tables inside and outside, a couple of large communal table and some bar seating along the windows. The design is simple but inviting and comprises white painted brick walls, terracotta tiled floor, complimenting light timber and grey furnishings and the rear wall completely filled with greenery. Lighting is ample with overhead table spotlights as well as the windows.
The food menu is just as simple as the design but delivers well with its 9 breakfast and 3 lunch dishes. Highlights include lemon curd hotcakes, chilli scrambled eggs and braised beef cheeks. The braised beef cheeks were cooked to perfection with the meat falling apart with ease. The beef is paired with glazed vegetables and potato purée making a great dish to warm up in winter.
Coffee is by Veneziano and MAKER with a blend and single origin options available as espresso and filter. Soy and almond milk are offered. Tea from Veneziano’s Elevation range, hit chocolate, prana chai and a range of juices, milkshakes and soft drinks are also available.
Quiet launch aside, the locals have found and embraced Brandy which provides an alternative to venturing over to busy nearby Glenferrie Road and is sure to be a neighbourhood favourite.
